AP Police break up protest by Agri Gold depositors
Several depositors threaten to commit suicide
Vijayawada: They were all once respectable customers of Agri Gold Group that collected crores as deposits. On Monday, hundreds were thrashed by the city police for taking out a rally demanding the managing director and chairman of Agri Gold Group appear before them and assure that their deposits would be returned.
The row over a scam by Agri Gold group, which is being probed by CID officials of West Godavari came to fore once again as victims from five south Indian states gathered in the city to stage a demonstration.
Peaceful protests by the victims turned violent as the police confronted the victims and arrested some of them while at least five women collapsed in the melee and scorching heat. The victims after a short rally from PWD grounds to sub-collector office submitted a memorandum and started a rally to the Agri Gold head office. They were confronted by police on MG Road and high drama prevailed as the police tried to pacify the protesters. However, the agents and customers managed to reach the head office of the company in large numbers and some of them were arrested by police.
“We came to know that the CM, his son and a TD MP conspired to bring down Agri Gold for not allowing them to take over Haailand, the theme park and resort owned by the Agri Gold and located close to AP capital. Innocent agents and customers are being dumped now due to issues between the Agri Gold management and politicians,” said Mr
Nagendra Prasad, an agent from Brahmana Koduru of Ponnuru mandal in Guntur district. Nagendra Prasad has over 3,000 customers and need to get over Rs 30 lakh from Agri Gold. Another customer from Proddutur came all the way to the city to take part in the demonstration. "My deposit matured in November 2013 and the cheques given to me bounced. I have to get Rs 3 lakh,” said Sivalingaiah.
