IT hub remains in dark
Several areas in the IT corridor saw massive power cuts on Friday and Saturday
Hyderabad: Several areas in the IT corridor saw massive power cuts on Friday and Saturday. Despite the so-called “no energy deficiency” situation in the state, local officials said that power shortage was the reason for the cuts. A sudden increase in load, by one and a half times, resulted in failure of lightening arresters at the RC Puram sub station on Saturday evening that led to a massive disruption of supply, as per officials.
Areas like Gachibowli, Madinaguda, Miyapur, Allwyn, Kothaguda, Chandanagar, RC Puram, Suraksha Colony and JNTU saw extensive night-time cuts ranging from five to six hours at a stretch. “The IT corridor has a problem of sudden load jumps in the night time, which results in the failure of equipment. During night hours, when people return from night shifts, mostly at around 11 pm, a sudden jump in consumption is recorded. This had led to equipment failures last year too. On Saturday, Gachibowli and RC Puram experienced huge loads that resulted in failures. It could only be restored at around 1 pm, when the load went down," said a local official, speaking on conditions of anonymity.
“Although there is no announcement of scheduled cuts, our area has been experiencing two to three hours of cuts each day. On Saturday it was extensive as there was a one-hour cut in the morning and in the evening the power cut was imposed from 8 pm to 1.30 pm in the night. The officials said that since there was a power shortage, power was being diverted and hence our area was facing a power cut,” said Mr B. Krishna Sai, a resident from Madhavapuri Hills in Madinaguda.
Consumers who kept calling the emergency number of the TSSPDCL throughout the power cut hours kept received the same response. “The only response that we got was that there was a heavy load and power could not be restored for another one hour, each time we called,” said Mr Koteshwar Rao. On Sunday again due to heavy gale and winds, power cuts were imposed as flexi banners fell on power lines, snapped many incoming supply lines and power disruptions were experienced for several hours.
