English Premier League: Liverpool down Queens Park Rangers
Coutinho, Gerrard score as Liverpool down QPR in home EPL game
Liverpool: Steven Gerrard had a penalty saved but then headed in a late winner as Liverpool all but guaranteed Queens Park Rangers’ Premier League relegation with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
Philippe Coutinho’s first-half goal and Gerrard’s 87th-minute effort, allied to results elsewhere, mean QPR are likely to make an instant return to the Championship even if they win their final three games. Chris Ramsey’s side, who levelled through Leroy Fer and had Nedum Onuoha sent off for two bookable offences, are now eight points from safety.
The victory was Liverpool’s first in four matches and eased some of the pressure that has been growing around manager Brendan Rodgers, who has seen his side’s hopes of Champions League qualification evaporate.
Leicester sink Newcastle 3-0
Leonardo Ulloa and Wes Morgan earned Leicester City a 3-0 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday, moving them closer to Premier League survival and hauling their opponents into danger.
John Carver’s Newcastle have now lost eight league matches in a row — the club’s worst run since 1977 — and are only one point above Leicester, who have won five out of their last six games.
Meanwhile, Christian Benteke continued his stunning resurgence with a brace as Aston Villa crept closer to Premier League safety by sinking in-form Everton 3-2 at Villa Park. The Belgium striker, revitalised since Tim Sherwood’s appointment as manager in February, scored twice in the first half for the FA Cup finalists to take his tally to 11 goals in nine games.
