Belagavi student tops engineering exam with 13 medals
BELAGAVI: Ahad Tarade, a BE civil engineering student from Belagavi, has secured first rank and created a record by bagging 13 gold medals and scoring highest marks across all engineering branches under Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in the state. He also got highest aggregate marks in all the eight semesters.
VTU vice-chancellor Dr H. Maheshappa said Ahad Tarade had scored 93.28 per cent marks and among the 13 gold medals, he will be getting Nijagunappa Gurulingappa Hakkapakki Gold Medal, S.G. Balekundri Gold Medal, Murthy’s Medal of Excellence, R.N. Shetty Gold Medal and VTU Gold Medal. A.S. Abhilash from Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT), who scored first rank in B.E Electrical and Electronics Engineering branch, has secured seven gold medals.
K.R. Sathyajit, a Computer Science student from RNS Institute of Technology Bangalore and Vidyasagar R., an Electronics and Communication student from Reva Institute of Technology Bangalore secured five gold medals each.
The medals will be presented at the VTU’s 14th convocation to be held on May 9 in Belagavi. Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu will be delivering the convocation address, while Governor Vajubhai Vala will preside and Higher Education Minister R.V. Deshpande will be the guest.
Highest number of toppers from Bengaluru
Of the 23 gold medalists in various BE/BTech courses, for year 2013-14, 8 are from colleges located in Bengaluru. They also bagged 44 of the 63 gold medals in M.Tech courses. According to Dr Maheshappa the pass percentage for B.E/B.Tech courses was 79.75 per cent. A total of 63,361 students appeared for the examinations, out of which 50,528 passed, while 12,833 failed.
The pass percentage for M.Tech courses was 100 per cent, while for MBA it was 73.47 per cent and MCA 95.72 per cent. Among girls, 19852 appeared for B.E/B.Tech examinations and 17,641 passed, while among boys 43,507 appeared and 32,887 passed. According to VC, the VTU will confer B.E degrees to 50,528 students, B.Arch degree to 138 students, MBA degree to 5,284 students and MCA to 3,401 students.
