No end to water woes at Malkajgiri
13 lakh residents deprived of adequate water
Hyderabad: Lack of infrastructure like elevated and ground level reservoirs and unscientific pipelines in the city’s biggest Parliamentary constituency is depriving its tax payers of regular supply of drinking water.
Even after an additional 45 million gallons a day started flowing into the city, thanks to Krishna Phase 3, Stage 1, Malkajgiri and its five divisions are receiving water every fourth or fifth day.
However, the residents want alternate day water supply but the board says it lacks infrastructure. The present pipeline network was laid by Malkajgiri municipality and is unfit to take the extra load.
The World Bank had recently sanctioned Rs 300 crore for a new network and the work is on. Around 13 lakh citizens reside in these divisions, while this segment would have to wait for two more years for the water woes to die.
B.T. Srinivas, president of Malkajgiri RWA said, “The present pipelines were laid 10 years ago by the Malkajgiri Municipality, similarly in Kapra and Alwal. When the board took over, it was found that the lines are not as per the board norms and of very cheap quality.
The lines have several leaking points, water gets contaminated and supplies are of low pressure. The board has been managing with these lines over 10 years and since then the supply has been poor, once in 10 days.”
K. Susheel Kavedi of Malkajgiri added, “We do not have elevated reservoirs and according to the present estimation, the area needs 10 elevated reservoirs while we just have four and out of the 4, 3 receive good supply. The situation is worst during power cuts since the water is received through pumping. All that we need is speedy project grounding.”
While a senior official from the Malkajgiri division said, the entire area is now under the World Bank scheme, the construction of 18 mm reservoir and pump houses are on. Right from the distribution lines up to individual house connecting pipelines will be changed.
There is water availability, but supply cannot be made owing to bad distribution lines. The board cannot spend, as the project is under World Bank as part of the then AP Major Development Project. All Ductile Iron pipes are being installed and in case of lines above 600 diameter, mild steel pipeline are being installed. These are as per the norms of the board and can withstand high pressure.
