Torchbearers of Telangana State stir lose office space in city
The entire block which houses the TJAC office went to AP as part of bifurcation
Hyderabad: The Telangana Political Joint Action Committee headed by Prof. Kodandaram, which played a crucial role in the Telangana agitation, has lost its shelter. Its office located in the New MLA Quarters in Adarshnagar was locked by AP government on Friday.
The entire block which houses the TJAC office went to AP as part of bifurcation of MLA Quarters in June last year. Though the AP government issued notices to vacate the premises long ago, the TJAC continued to use it all these days by taking ‘temporary permissions’.
The TJAC has been requesting the TRS government to allot a new office since last year, but the government has not responded. The news of the office being locked broke when Prof. Kodandaram was busy with his son’s wedding in the city on Friday.
Since its formation in 2009, the TJAC was functioning from Quarter No. 222 in Block-11, which was then allotted to BJP MLA from Nizamabad Yendala Lakshminarayana. He lost the election in 2014. Then Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy allegedly ordered the closure of TJAC office in 2011 but it could not be carried out due to stiff opposition from TRS MLAs then who brought pressure on the Speaker against the order.
Though some TS MLAs wanted to accommodate the TJAC in the quarters allotted to them, there has been no response from the government. However, Prof. Kodandaram said that there is a possibility of retaining the existing premises by taking ‘special permission’ from the AP government.
“The entire block was allotted to AP after bifurcation of the state. They asked us to take special permission by submitting a letter to the AP Legislature Secretary. We are yet to submit the letter. We are hopeful of getting permission from AP to use the existing premises for our office,” he said.
Though TJAC lost its prominence after formation of Telangana, its leaders, mostly belonging to employees’ unions, have been maintaining that the TJAC would continue to play the role of ‘watch dog’ to protect the interests of Telangana people.
