Car makers go into top gear

Maruti Suzuki reported a 27 per cent growth in domestic sales in April
New Delhi: Car companies started the new fiscal year on a good note with sales in top gear for Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda and Toyota in April.
India’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki reported a 27 per cent growth in domestic sales in April as the consumer sentiment improved due to comparatively low fuel prices and a cut in interest rates.
Exports too were up by 56 per cent. Due to this, Maruti’s total sales (domestic and export) increased by 30 per cent in April.
Hyundai Motor India, the second largest car maker, posted 9.5 per cent increase in domestic sales in April. “Hyundai with a volume of 38,601 units continued the growth momentum with 9.5 per cent increase over last year on the strength of a strong and young product portfolio,” said Rakesh Srivast-ava, senior V-P (sales and marketing), HMIL.
Honda Cars India registered monthly domestic sales of 12,636 units in April 2015 against 11,040 units in the same month last year, a growth of 14 per cent.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor registered a growth of 63 per cent in the month of April when compared to the corresponding period last year.
However, Mahindra & Mahindra could manage just one per cent increase in sales and General Motors India saw its sales decline during the month. “The overall customer sentiment has not picked up as expected and the rural markets are also facing challenging times. The fuel price hike last night is also expected to impact demand going forward,” said P. Balendran, vice-president, General Motors India.
