Solid waste: Bengaluru hotels face Vijay Bhaskar’s music

A team of BBMP officials locked up K.C. Das, the iconic sweet shop on Church Street

Bengaluru: Hotels in the Central Business District will have to clean up their act as the newly appointed city administrator, T.M. Vijay Bhaskar, steps up his drive to rid Bengaluru of its solid waste pile-up.

A team of BBMP officials locked up K.C. Das, the iconic sweet shop on Church Street when they found the eatery, which did not have a trade license handy, was not segregating waste. A fine of Rs 2 lakh was imposed on the Chancery Hotel on Lavelle Road, for not having proper garbage dumping points or segregating kitchen waste.

“They mix meat waste with plastic,” exclaimed Dr Savitha, health officer (East Zone). Rs 1 lakh was added to the fine because the hotel has no designated smoking area.

The team also visited Koshy’s on St Mark’s Road and the Empire hotel on Church Street. Both restaurants escaped the wrath of the no-nonsense inspection crew as they segregate their waste and are registered with BBMP-approved vendors. Chancery Hotel was served with a notice and must reply within a week.
