Hyderabad: The Centre has expressed its inability to supply natural gas to the proposed 1,600 MW gas-based power plant at Shankarapally in RR district.
“Natural gas is not available to supply to the existing units... we cannot supply to new plants at all,” power minister Piyush Goyal told TRS MP K. Visweswara Reddy in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
“Many gas-based plants have been supplied RLNG instead of gas. We request you to consider whether at least that can be done,” Mr Reddy said but to no avail.
“As things stand today, gas plants that can generate 14,000 MW of power are not functioning. In addition, plants that can generate 10,000 MW of power are running at less capacity. How and where can we get gas? The RLNG issue is separate and it has to be imported heavily,” Mr Goyal said.
The unit, 30 km from the city, was conceived in 2002 to meet the energy needs of Hyderabad and surroundings. It has all clearances and requires 5 million metric standard cubic metres per day.
