US President Barack Obama urges Americans to do soul searching

Obama expressed deep frustration on Wednesday over recurring black deaths
Washington: The US President Barack Obama expressed deep frustration on Wednesday over recurring black deaths at the hands of police, rioters responding with senseless violence and a society that will only “feign concern” without addressing the root causes. A day after rioting erupted following the funeral for Freddie Gray, who died of a spinal cord injury after being arrested, Obama urged Americans to “do some soul-searching.” “This is not new. It’s been going on for decades,” Obama said from the White House, just 65 kilometres to the south of Baltimore.
“We have seen too many instances of what appears to be police officers interacting with individuals, primarily Afro-American, often poor, in ways that raise troubling questions. It comes up, it seems like, once a week now,” Obama said.
Curfew calms down Baltimore:
Riot police in the US city of Baltimore enforced a curfew into the early hours of Wednesday and called it a success. Many schools have reportedly also reopened. National Guards and officials manned security lines on the city’s streets that saw a widespread violence till late Tuesday.
Mom whacks teen son for rioting:
A mother, who was recorded hitting her 16-year-old son after she saw him throwing objects at Baltimore police, says when they made eye contact, he knew he was in trouble. “I’m a no-tolerant mother. Everybody knows I don’t play that,” Toya Graham, a single mother of six, said.
