Panel finds DCC leaders guilty

Veerendra Kumar’s defeat in Palakkad

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The UDF sub-committee which conducted probed the defeat of JD (U) state president M.P. Veerendra Kumar in Palakkad constituency in the last Lok Sabha elections has recommended action against Palakkad DCC president C.V. Balachandran and two DCC leaders, C. Chandran and P. Balagopal.

UDF convener P. P. Thankachan told reporters here that he would submit the report to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday.

The sub-committee found that there were lapses in poll activities and that the DCC president and his colleagues had not taken the elections seriously which led to Mr Veerendra Kumar’s defeat.

“Also, the election funds which should have reached the party workers as well as election accessories did not reach there on time. The UDF coordination committee will decide whether the report should be made public or not,” said Mr Thankachan.

Earlier, the sub-committee was headed by KC (B) chairman R. Balakrishna Pillai. But when he severed his ties with the UDF, Mr Thankachan led the sub-committee.

Mr Veerendra Kumar refused to comment on the issue saying he was away in Chennai and was not aware of what the UDF convener had said.
