NRI marriages still risky

In 2014, over 150 cases of harassment were reported by women from Hyderabad alone

Hyderabad: Despite numerous background checks and precautions taken before going ahead with an NRI marriage, the number of women duped hasn’t gone down, according to State Mahila Commission.

Recently, Nasreen Fathima, a 24-year old from the city lodged a complaint about her husband, living in Australia and his family, alleging that they are trapping women from the city in the name of marriage.

Nasreen plans to approach the Commission to get her dowry money back. “I don’t want to go back to that person. I want them to be punished, so that they don’t repeat this with any other woman.”

Though the in-laws were arrested, the case is still going on, but there might not be much respite any time soon, as the husband is still working in Australia.

In 2014, over 150 cases of harassment were reported by women from Hyderabad alone. Nearly 50 petitions were filed with the Women’s Commission from the state till now this year and none of the cases have been tackled.

The victims are mostly women in their early twenties. Women’s commission chairperson said there should be new rules formulated and inter-department coordination for quick justice in such cases.

“In one case, the husband of an engineering graduate from the city sent her the divorce via post from USA. The couple had two kids who are citizens of USA. Though the Indian laws won’t accept the divorce, the laws of the the US do. The woman wanted to see the kids once, but we can’t force it because of the laws of that country. Eventually had to give up,” said Tripurana Venkatratnam, chairperson of AP State Mahila Commission.
