Kozhikode corporation gears up for monsoon drive

Sum of Rs 55.41 lakh has been set aside for covering all the 75 wards

KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode city corporation is all set to start the pre-monsoon health drive from May 5.

The health standing committee has chalked out a comprehensive action plan to check the outbreak of communicable diseases during monsoon as part of the ‘Mazhayethum munpe-2015’ project being implemented with the cooperation of local self- government department.

A sum of Rs 55.41 lakh has been set aside for the purpose covering all the 75 wards.

The committee has directed the ward councillors to convene the meeting of ward-level health sanitation and nutrition committee to implement the action plan.

According to the plan, desilting of drains would be completed by May 15. Collection of strewn plastic waste and the recycling process have already started and will continue till June 5.

Rat poison will be distributed on April 29 and the cleaning of public places and institutions will be done on May 15.

The health awareness campaign would commence on May 2 followed by inspection by the health squad till May 31. Chlorination will start from May 20.

The segregation of waste and disposal will be carried out in a scientific manner incorporating the opinions of experts from the Pollution Control Board and Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

“The drive will be conducted with the active participation of various civic organisations and clubs,” said Janamma Kunjunni, corporation health standing committee chairperson.

The pre-monsoon drive will see action at three levels—ward, circle and corporation—with the support of public libraries, residents’ associations, health institutions, schools, merchants, youth and women organiaations.

Besides, Kudumbashree, ADS and CDS members will be roped in. Meanwhile, an opposition councillor, who did not want to be named, lashed out at the corporation’s apathy in desilting the drainage.

“Summer showers have already clogged the drainage in many parts of the city, triggering an epidemic threat. But the corporation has been sitting idle without any concern,” he said.
