Bengaluru: Foul-smelling mountain of white froth greets Whitefielders

Untreated sewage is released into the drains leading to the lake by apartments near the lake

Bengaluru: For Whitefielders, used to the stench of polluted Varthur Lake and overflowing sewage, this took the cake. Or should that be foam!

On Tuesday morning, a foul-smelling 100 foot high mountain of white froth, a vile mix of rain water, untreated sewage and refuse, rose up from Varthur Lake and moved steadily on to the main road at Varthur Junction as if it had a life of its own, through which cars and people, mostly children had to navigate!

Says Mr Elangovan, a member of Whitefield Rising: “Untreated sewage is released into the drains leading to the lake by apartments near the lake. We have seen foam in the lake earlier, but never in such quantities. A team of researchers from IISc has found that foam is caused due to human urine.”

So much for an inspection by Upa Lokayukta Justice Subash Adi, who on March 28 came right here to Varthur Lake - one of the most polluted water bodies in the city and ordered the Survey Department to mark the boundaries of the 440-acres lake and issue notices to encroachers.
