Chennai: In all, 38 persons hailing from different parts of Tamil Nadu arrived here on Tuesday after being rescued from quake-hit Nepal. Initially flown to Delhi, they were later brought to Chennai by different flights in batches since Monday night. The count of Tamilians stranded in Nepal and subsequently rescued by Indian relief agencies is expected to increase in the coming days.
Chandrasekhar, 65, of Salem, was on a pilgrimage to the Himalayan country with his family. But he and the rest of his group were unhurt following the massive 7.9 earthquake that shook Nepal on Saturday.
“We lived in the streets for the last few days, fearing another quake. There are 300 more Tamils waiting at Kathmandu airport for the airlift," Chandrasekhar said. After being airlifted to Delhi, state government officials at Tamil Nadu House attended to those rescued and made sure flights to Chennai were arranged for them. On Sunday, the state said 311 persons from TN were in Nepal and efforts were being undertaken to evacuate them.
