IPL has got competition, here comes the new Indian Cricket League?

Essel Group, headed by Subhash Chandra is making early inroads to rekindle its interest in cricket

Mumbai: The Indian Cricket League (ICL) might just show its face back again, according to developments with the organisers - Essel Group, headed by Subhash Chandra have suggested.

In a report published by The Times of India, the company is making early inroads to rekindle its interest in cricket, including a move that involves registering companies in Australia, New Zealand and other ICC member nations.

"The IPL is just a copy of the format that we had created in the first place. And the previous BCCI administrators, including Lalit Modi, admitted that they felt threatened by what we did back then," a top official of the Essel Group told a leading news daily.

Rumours have been doing the rounds that former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi will be part of the plans but the report says he is not in the Group's scheme of things. "The reports [of registering companies] are correct but they're all at a nascent stage and are still being worked upon. We'll share details as things develop," the official added.

The official maintains the Group will make a list of do's and don'ts before going on floor. "That experience has taught us a lot and this time when we return, we'll be better prepared. We know how not to burn our fingers now," he said.

Whether Essel's return to the game would bring about any change or not to the current format of the cash rich Indian Premier League is still left unknown.
