Fishermen beneficiaries left out of government scheme

1,200 families were shifted to the nearby tenements of Nochikuppam and Thoraipakkum
Chennai: A number of rooms allocated by the slum clearance board in the newly-built housing colony in Nochinagar hamlet is either leased out or rented to ineligible people, allege residents staying in the temporary tenements and are yet to be allotted a room.
On Monday, the residents said due to this, the real beneficiaries, mostly fishermen who had to vacate their houses after the government demolished the houses, are suffering. They also added that most of these residents are now staying elsewhere and around 20-30 families stay in the temporary settlements.
In 2010, 1,200 families were shifted to the nearby tenements of Nochikuppam and Thoraipakkum as most of the buildings were in a dilapidated condition, with the state slum clearance board later building the houses in the respective areas.
“There are more than 150 people who are either staying at different parts of the city by renting out the rooms to their distant relatives and friends for Rs 5,000 per month whereas people like us, who have no other source of income apart from fishing, stay in the temporary tents with poor electricity and water facility,” said R. Sundaravel, a fisherman.
Slum clearance board officials maintained that they had already taken note of the issue and will make sure that all the eligible people are allocated rooms in the vicinity. “As there are a lot of complication and issues regarding the allocation of houses in the Nochikuppam and Nochinagar areas and that most of them have already been moved to the newly built houses, we know that some people have leased out their rooms to outsiders. Once the whole allocation process is over, we will rectify this problem,” said a senior official of the slum clearance board.
