Farmers seek exemption from land acquistion

The farmers who came in large numbers met the collector who was at Machilipatnam
VIJAYAWADA: Farmers of Manginapudi, Tapasipudi, Gopuva-nipalem, Mekavarithota, Chinakaragraharam and Pedakaragraharam in Machilipatnam mandal in Krishna district requested the district collector A. Babu to exempt private lands from being acquired for the proposed Machilipatnam Port.
The farmers who came in large numbers met the collector who was at Machilipatnam on Monday to participate in the weekly ‘Mee Kosam’ programme.
The collector asked them to cooperate and assured that he will ensure that no injustice is done to them in the la-nd procurement process. He said that already the acquisition of private lands was cut down by 500 acres after taking the apprehensions of the farmers into consideration.
Mr Babu stated that the proposed multicrore cracker unit will be est-ablished near Machiliptnam only if the Machilipatnam port takes shape. Both these ambitious projects will change the fortunes of this region a lot.
He promised to construct pucca houses to those who may lose their homes for the port and suitable compensation for the procured lands. Later, the Collector instructed the officials to work hard to reach the target of constructing 1.50 lakh toilets by June this year.
He said that till now only 26,000 were grounded. He has also asked to fill all the ponds in villages to avoid drinking water shortage and also to provide fans for every Anganwadi centre. He ordered to seek ex-planation from those officials who were absent for the ‘Mee Kosam’.
