7 shrines in Hyderabad Metro path
GHMC says all structures need not be relocated to facilitate work
Hyderabad: Seven religious structures have been identified on the Ameerpet – Lakdikapul Metro corridor that will have to be either relocated or partly demolished. A committee comprising the Hyderabad traffic police, assistant city planners and HMR officials, has identified these structures that are obstructing the Metro corridor on this stretch.
The identification process of these structures was reportedly done by the Traffic department. “One of these religious structures, a temple which is located opposite the Nims Hospital, will be relocated near the Erramanzil Zonal Office of GHMC,” said a senior GHMC official.
However, not all the structures need to be relocated. “Not all of them need relocation. For instance, there’s a graveyard on this stretch. We are planning to build a causeway over it,” said the official.
When asked how far the management committees of these religious structures had agreed to the plans, the officials remained tight-lipped and only said that it was not just a “religious issue” but also one mired in “politics." “The Metro corridor is a high priority project for us. We will soon identify the religious structures in other stretches too,” said the official.
Metro flyover works not to stop Begumpet traffic:
Traffic will not be halted while building Metro elevations over flyovers or railway junctions. The Panjagutta double elevation is been carried out without halting traffic, similar to the one done at Malakpet flyover; this is the second double elevation after the Uppal Junction.
It will take three months for the linking to be completed. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Chintavar building, housing Reddy Wines, at Begumpet will be demolished to make way for the Metro.
This is the third building in a row after the Jabbar and Allahuddin buildings on the Begumpet stretch. HMR managing director N.V.S. Reddy said, “The Metro viaduct construction above flyovers would take three months and an extra month in case of railway crossings. There will be no traffic halt during the works, it’s as simple as building a flyover over another flyover. The construction will have to be done in situ (there itself),” he said.
The junctions where the Metro will go above flyovers are Panjagutta, Green lands - Begumpet, Lakdikapul, Parade Ground, Narayanguda, Alugaddabavi, Paradise, Malakpet and Hitec City.
2 station roads to get facelift:
Roads leading to the city’s two major railway stations will get major facelift. The road from Oliphant Bridge up to Secunderabad station and the stretch in front of Nampally will be developed, to give way for Metro stations, said sources.
The development work will include road widening, footpaths, traffic islands, debris removal and land acquisition. The stretch from the railway bridge up to the Clock Tower, Secunderabad will be widened. The GHMC has already asked Transco to shift the electrical sub station near the clock tower.
The corridor development is being taken up by GHMC and HMR though the latter will be more involved where the Metro stations are coming up. HMR MD N.V.S. Reddy said, “The Secunderabad Railway station, Nampally area up to MJ Market is the most complicated stretch. At MJ Market there are many vacant government properties, the GHMC will take over these lands for development of parking lots, auto and bus bays.”
