Kalabharati proposal faces gully cricketers’ bouncers
The Chief Minister should explore other places to set up Kalabharathi,” Mr Laxman said
Hyderabad: More than 1,000 schoolchildren and ‘gully’ cricketers opposed the Chief Minister’s plan to build Kalabharathi, the Telangana state government’s cultural complex at NTR Stadium near Indira Park.
They said they would lose the only free space they have in the area where they can play. Musheerabad BJP MLA K. Laxman and CPI leader K. Narayana were on their regular morning walk at Indira Park were persuaded to visit the NTR Stadium across the road, where several small sports organisations and hundreds of children — who have been using the ground for the last 15 years — told them they would lose their playground.
The children said the GHMC runs free summer camps for a variety of sports at NTR Stadium every year. “I am thoroughly convinced. Except for this ground, no other space is available in the city for children from middle and lower middle class families. The Chief Minister should explore other places to set up Kalabharathi,” Mr Laxman said. He pointed out that Mr Rao had earlier said a 24-acre site at DBR Mills was available opposite Hussainsagar; that place would be more suitable for Kalabharathi rather than displacing children from the playground, he said.
Dr Narayana said the CPI’s Hyderabad unit was planning a protest next week. “Kalabharathi is a good idea, we support it. But it can be constructed at some other place. Why should the government deny children a place to play?” he asked.
