311 Tamilnadu tourists stranded in Nepal

Tamil Nadu House in Delhi is coordinating with the external affairs ministry to bring the people
Chennai: The state government on Sunday said it was taking all necessary steps to bring back 311 people stranded in Nepal after the massive earthquake hit the country on Saturday. The TN government has also set up a control room in Delhi with telephone numbers 011-24193460 and 011-24193456.A press release said that based on information, collected till Sunday afternoon through telephone calls received at district collectors’ offices from relatives of the people who have travelled to Nepal, as many as 311 persons from TN are stranded there.
The Tamil Nadu House in Delhi is coordinating with the external affairs ministry in trying to bring the people back to Tamil Nadu from Nepal, the release said. Five stranded passengers — Arun Krishna, Edwards, Latika Arya and her two daughters — reached Chennai by flights on Sunday night from Delhi. Arun Krishna and Edward arrived on the 7.30 pm flight and walked away without meeting the waiting government officials and media personnel.
Latika Arya and daughter arrived on the 11.30 pm flight. Madhavan, a group tour operator from Chromepet who went with 45 tourists from various parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, said all those travelling with him are safe. “We hope to start from here by Monday. We are all safe,” he said when this newspaper contacted him. According to Mr Elantharayan, a tour operator from Chennai, who traveled with Ranaga Narayana Jeeyar Swamigal of Srirangam from Nepal, on Saturday, all the 187 passengers had reached home safely.
Sathish Kumar E, employee of a travel agency who is still awaiting his turn to get into a flight in Kathmandu, says that people are breaking queues to get into the aircraft. “It is kind of chaos here. Stranded passengers are breaking the queue. There is no food and water for us here,” he said. Another tour operator Amrit A, from Chennai, said that he had taken 54 passengers from Chennai and 17 from Coimbatore and added that all are safe in Pokhara in Nepal.
