Another 150 people from Karnataka still stranded in quake-hit Himalayan nation n Airlifting to resume today
BENGALURU: About 150 people from Karnataka, who got stuck in earthquake-hit Nepal, were rescued and they reached New Delhi and other parts of the country through road and flights. Nearly 90 people from the state have been now sheltered at Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi and they will be returning to their hometowns by trains and flights.
The Secretary for Disaster Management, Ritesh Kumar Singh, said that about 150 people from the state were still stuck in Nepal and efforts were on to airlift them by Monday morning.
“Two officers from the state have been sent to Kathmandu to assist the stranded people from the state, who could not take the afternoon flight, as the airport closed due to aftershock. The officers managed to land in Kathmandu on Sunday night and we will have a clearer picture by Monday morning. On Sunday about 80 people from the state have come to India through Gorakhpur by road and they will be provided assistance to reach their respective town by trains. We are having talks with the Railway Ministry to arrange tickets for those who have come to New Delhi and other parts from Nepal,” he said. On Monday, the state government would be sending a team of 10 doctors to quake hit Kathmandu.
They will be carrying 15 kg of medicines and reach Kathmandu by Monday afternoon. Health Minister U.T. Khader will flag-off the team on Monday morning. Singh said that there has been enough supply for water and other rescue materials, but an urgent need of doctors. “Several people have been injured and Nepalese authorities are facing acute shortage of doctors. Once the first batch lands and start assisting the local authorities, we shall take a decision on sending another team. The doctors have been chosen from both government and private sectors,” Singh added.
The local disaster management control room in Bengaluru was flooded with calls on Sunday by the anxious relatives in Karnataka. “About 1,000 calls were received on Sunday alone. As most of them are unable to reach their relatives on phone, they are getting worried. They are repeatedly calling the Control Room in Bengaluru to know the whereabouts of their dear ones,” said a Control Room official. About 330 people from the state got stuck in Kathmandu after the quake and nearly half of them have made it to New Delhi and other parts of India, he added.
