Institute of Ageing gets Central push

Team visits sites proposed for setting up AIIMS
Chennai: A team from the Centre conducted an inspection at the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research on Saturday for the establishment of the National Institute of Ageing.In addition to treatment for the aged, the facility will also encourage research and training in geriatric specialties. As many as 15 postgraduates will be trained to specialise in geriatric care, apart from giving periodical training to physicians across the state. Dharitri Panda, joint secretary, ministry of health and family welfare, who headed the inspection team says, “The institute in Chennai will be the first in south India and the second in the country with the first one to be established at the AIIMS in Delhi.
The Centre is ready to fund Rs 100 crore of non-recurring fund and Rs50 crore recurring fund for the facility in Chennai, as per the 12thfive-year plan.”“The facility that will be established on about 10 acres will be linked to the Madras Medical College. However 50 acres on the Guindy site was inspected on Saturday,” says state health secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan.
Following the inspection here, the team left for Chengalpattu in Kancheepuram district to inspect the site for the proposed AIIMS hospital in the state. The team has been inspecting five proposed locations by the state including the one at Chengalpet for the past three days. The other proposed sites are Perundurai in Erode, Thoppur in Madurai, Pudukottai town in Pudukottai district and Sengipatti in Thanjavur. The best site will be decided by the Centre and work is likely to start in the next four to six months.
“The AIIMS hospital will be established over about 200 acres at an estimated cost of Rs1,500 to Rs1,800 crore. The Centre expects state government to give free land and allied infrastructures like water supply, electricity and road access,” Dharitri adds.
