Centre asks AP on the need for new Election Commission

The matter had been referred to the Centre by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan
Hyderabad: The Centre has asked the AP government on constitution of the AP State Election Commission. The matter had been referred to the Centre by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan.
The Centre asked the AP government about the necessity to constitute a new State Election Commission when one such body is already in existence. Is it not enough to just appoint a State Election Commissioner, when the APSEC already exists, the Centre asked.
The AP government had earlier sent a file on setting up of the State Election Commission. to the Governor. The Governor did not approve the file but sent it to the Centre for its opinion. Some senior officials in the AP government pointed out that the government did not follow the proper procedure of issuing an executive order for the constitution of the SEC.
The AP government’s argument is that the Telangana government has a right to constitute its own bodies to state-level institutions. “Why can;t we constitute new bodies to the institutions,” an official said.
