Bengaluru: Police constable assaults woman conductor

She was allegedly assaulted by Basavaraju, a constable attached to Byatarayanapura police station

BENGALURU: A police constable allegedly assaulted a woman bus conductor and misbehaved with her following a spat over his reluctance to buy bus ticket. Bus conductor Anupama, 30, was allegedly assaulted by Basavaraju, a constable attached to Byatarayanapura police station.

Ms. Anupama told DC that she was on duty on Saturday morning on the Majestic-Mysuru Road Satellite Bus Station route.

“At 8 am, the bus left Majestic for Satellite Bus Station, and Basavaraju did not buy ticket though I asked him to do so. When he claimed that he is a policeman, I asked him to produce his identity card. He felt offended and picked a quarrel with me. However, other passengers took him to task for not buying ticket and for being rude with me. Then, he gave me Rs. 1,000 note. When I said I do not have change for Rs. 1,000, he began quarreling with me. However, I managed to give him the change and issued ticket,” she said.

“When the bus reached the Satellite Bus Station, Basavaraju started abusing me again. He assaulted me and tore my uniform. By that time, other passengers at the station came to my rescue. In the melee, the constable fell on the road and started accusing the public of assaulting him,” Ms. Anupama alleged.

“Meanwhile, the policemen on duty at the bus station supported Basavaraju and blamed me and the bus driver for the incident. They asked me to come to the police station, where the issue was settled,” she said.
