‘Please stay safe,’ sporting world prays after 7.9-magnitude earthquake hits Nepal
New Delhi: North and North East India shook severely for over a minute around noon on Saturday morning, from a 7.9-magnitude earthquake epicentred in Nepal's capital Kathmandu.
All parts of the National Capital Region felt strong tremors. Vibrations were also felt in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Bengal, which are closer to the earthquake-prone Himalayan region.
There was panic in the Capital as people poured out of their homes and offices to the streets.
Delhi Metro services were temporarily suspended but resumed shortly. Kolkata Metro also stopped operations for a while. There were also reports of mobile phone services going off in Patna.
Around 12:20 pm, nearly half an hour after the first tremors, aftershocks were felt again in the entire region.
Robin Uthappa, the KKR wicketkeeper, hoped everyone is ‘safe and sound’ while Harsha Bhogle, who is in Delhi, tweeted this.
