Residents shame GHMC
Cops call Sewage Board to repair Raghavendra Nagar drain
Hyderabad: Traffic came to a standstill for an hour at the Nacharam crossroads on Friday morning as angry residents of Raghavendra Nagar took to the streets to protest against GHMC and the Sewerage Board officials. For six months, the main drain of the colony has not been functioning and the colony is flooded after even a slight rain.
The GHMC sanitation wing blames its engineering wing which in turn blames the Sewerage Board, say sources. The residents blocked traffic till the cops called the Sewerage Board to attend to the issue. However, no one from the Board turned up. Around 50 residents sat on the main crossroads with boards mentioning the problems in the colony.
"The real problem is that the pipelines were not laid as per the tender standards. The engineering people who sanction the bills were paid huge bribes and as such the quality of the sewerage lines are sub standard…” alleged Mr N. Rao, resident of Raghavendra Nagar. “The main drain has not been cleaned over a year now and even a slight shower leads to a flood-like situation. It takes days for the water to subside.
The smell puts off everyone. “On April 23 we sent information to the GHMC and Water Board that residents would be holding a dharna in case they did not solve the issue, but they did nothing. The matter was repeatedly brought to the notice of GHMC and Water Board sanitary officers, assistant engineer (AE) and zonal commissioner as well,” added Mr M. Kesavulu, who led the protest. The residents warned that they would hold similar protests if the situation did not change. The GHMC zonal head has meanwhile promised to inspect the area on Saturday and review the situation.
