One year to clean up Durgam Cheruvu

The lake is being restored as per the orders of the High Court and the Lok Ayukta
Hyderabad: It will take at least a year to clean Durgam Cheruvu. The Sewerage Board is spending Rs 35 crore to divert the sewerage lines linked to the lake. The lake is also bedevilled by massive hyacinth growth. The lake is being restored as per the orders of the High Court and the Lok Ayukta. Many upmarket residential communities and surrounding industrial areas have been letting their waste into the lake over the years. Earlier sewer lines of multinational companies were also connected to the so-called Secret Lake.
As part of the Phase-1 of the project taken up by the HMWS&SB, a 1,000-mm diameter ring sewer main drain is being laid around the periphery and downstream of the lake up to Mallika Cheruvu.
It will further divert the sewage entering the lake from three main storm water drains at Madhapur nala, Silent Valley nala and Industrial Area Local Authorities nala. Once the sewage inflow is stopped, the lake can be purified by letting in treated water from the sewage treatment plant,” said Sewerage Board area general manager. Phase-II will include construction of a sewage treatment plant at Mallika Cheruvu. The board has taken up the construction of interception and diversion lines at Madhapur.
