NSS students bust taboo, climb coconut palms
THRISSUR: The National Service Scheme volunteers of C. Achutha Menon Government College, here, were given training on climbing coconut trees.
The volunteers were trained for three days to climb coconut trees and also to pluck the coconut and clean the tree. Apart from earning pocket money while studying, the climbing of coconut trees improves confidence and concentration of the mind.
The trained volunteers are now ready to give training to people thereby minimizing the shortage of workers to climb coconut trees.
The first batch consisting of 12 volunteers were trained by Mr. Sijin Jose, an NSS volunteer of the college. Mr Sijin was a great source of inspiration for the volunteers as he managed the expenditure incurred on studies with the income that he got from climbing coconut trees.
“A number of NSS volunteers from the college have registered their names to get training to climb coconut trees and the training for the second batch has already begun” said Dr. C Sijo Varghese, NSS Programme Officer.
Ms. Ashy Pauly, NSS volunteer of the college who underwent training remarked that just like any another job, women could also easily carry out this job with better precision than men.
“More women need to come to this field as it helps them to maintain body fitness. The programme has rejuvenated the spirit of NSS volunteers as it paves the way for conquering more challenging tasks in the future. The major purpose of the programme was to discern the difference between knowledge and skill and the harmonious blending of the two” she added.
