KMC not keen on LED streetlights

The central lighting system has also not been completed till now
Kakinada: Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC) seems barely concerned about reducing its power cost, maintenance of street lights in the city and converting to LED (Light-Emitting Diode) lightning. Street lights in many areas do not function properly and the maintenance contractor does not properly organize the system. Street lights in many areas like Animal Husbandry Office road which goes to railway station, Sambamurthy Nagar, Dummulapet, Mahalaks-hmi Nagar, New Port Rai-lway Station and some of the interior colonies in merged villagers, remain dysfunctional.
“As many as 40 per cent of street lights do not function properly. Though I brought it to the notice of the KMC officials, the system has not been set right till now,” said Bharatiya Kisan Morcha state general secretary Y. Malakondaiah. He said that some of the officials are colluding with electrical contractors and neglecting the improvement of street lighting.
The central lighting system has also not been completed till now. Denizens are afraid of moving in the streets in dark on account of stray dogs and pigs attacking them.
The KMC officials have received complaints from citizens for improving the street lighting system and failure of street lights at Ramaraopet, Gandhingar, Jagannaickpur and other areas.
The municipal administration had instructed the municipalities and civic bodies to make use of LEDs to reduce their power expenses, two years back. But, till now, the KMC has not paid attention to it.
“Proposals would be made for introducing LED soon. We are giving priority to set right the street lighting system. We solved most of the problems regarding street lights. At present 94 per cent of street lights are functioning effectively. Remaining system can be improved soon,” said executive engineer of KMC M. Suryanarayana.
According to officials, the existing contractor has been dismissed and the KMC officials are now supervising, maintaining and also taking steps to improve the system.
