Hailstorm downed trees that fell on electricity wires in Masireddypalli in Cherial causing short circuit
Warangal: Heavy rains in the past two days in Warangal district damaged crops like paddy, corn, banana and also mango farms across hundreds of acres. Heavy rains, accompanied by hailstorm, damaged paddy crops in Pembarthy village in Hasanparthy mandal. Gouru Thirupati Reddy, who owns 3 acres of paddy farm in Pembarthy said that untimely rain cost him Rs 3 lakh. “The crop was ready for harvesting. The hailstorm last night completely ruined the crop causing me huge loss. My mango orchard too got affected by heavy winds. Fruits from most of the trees dropped and they are all small in size. They are of no use now,” he said.
Not just crops, the hailstorm downed trees that fell on electricity wires in Masireddypalli in Cherial causing short circuit in nearby homes, damaging televisions and fridges. 700 acres of paddy got damaged due to the rains in the district. In Narsampet, turmeric and corn for drying got completely drenched and were rendered useless. Corn that was brought to the agricultural market got wet too and some bags even got washed away in the rainwater.
In Chennaraopet, paddy in 275 hectares and corn in 150 hectares was lost. Papaya across 5 hectares and mango across 10 hectares were destroyed too. Transformers, electric poles and the electricity system was completely damaged in the area.
Narsampet MLA Donthi Madhava Reddy took stock of the loss and demanded the government to announce compensation to the farmers as soon as possible. In Duggondi, many trees fell on electric wires damaging as many as three electric poles and also damaged roofs of some of the houses. Corn, banana, turmeric and mango crops were damaged in 235 acres according to agriculture department officials.
