Dog killing: 800 to protest today

A rally to protest the killing will be conducted by People for Animals and other animal rights groups

Hyderabad: A Facebook campaign for a rally to be conducted to protest the killing of a dog has gained the support of more than 800 people.

A female dog, which had recently given birth, was reportedly beaten and then thrown into a lake. Blue Cross volunteers said the incident occurred in Kukatpally a few days ago.

A rally to protest the killing will be conducted by People for Animals and other animal rights groups, from People’s Plaza to Jal Vihar at 6 pm on Saturday.

Nita Paropkari, a volunteer with the Blue Cross, said, “A person called our helpline and told us about the incident. Two people, an owner of an apartment and the owner of a beauty salon, were not happy with the dog and its pups. They hired some people to get rid of them. These people clobbered the dog and threw her into the lake. The dog was trying to swim ashore to her pups but died.”

The Kukatpally police station is very close to where the incident took place, but no complaint was lodged. A clause under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, makes this incident a cognisable offence. The police can also file a case under the IPC.
