Director Sudheer Varma, who had made an impressive debut with Swamy Ra Ra, has returned with Dohchay with Naga Chaitanya and Kriti Sanon. Like the earlier one, this one too is a crime comedy.
Chandu (Naga Chaitanya) is a small-time thief who uses his brains rather than brawns. He steals small things to support his sister, who is studying medicine. His father (Rao Ramesh) is in the jail, serving a life term. Manikyam (Posani Krishna Murali) is a big don and Chandu has to meet him in an incident that involves a huge amount of money.
Chandu needs that money badly as it will solve his problems and get his father out of jail.
The film revolves around why Chandu’s father is in jail, what is the connection between Chandu and Manikyam and how he tackles the don. The storyline of the film is pretty thin and the director concentrates more on entertainment than the crime part. And after seeing Dohchay, you come away with the feeling that it is a sequel to Sudheer Varma’s earlier film Swamy Ra Ra.
On the performance front, Naga Chaitanya looks cool and has pulled off the character very well. You can see the maturity in his acting and it is good to see him experimenting. Kriti Sanon looks very glamorous, though her role is limited, but impressive.
The other highlight is Posani Krishna Murali, who once again is the key performer of the film. As a villain he has mixed comedy and playing the bad guy very well. Brahmanandam comes in the second half and he is as usual, at his best. Technically, the music is average except for a couple of songs. The dialogues, however, are impressive.
However, the film’s narration is too slow and there are some illogical scenes. The climax could have been better, rather than the typical run-of-the-mill stuff. Dohchay on the whole is an entertaining film for a one-time watch. See it for Naga Chaitanya. But for Sudheer Varma, his debut film was far better.
