Take steps to stop farmers’ suicide: Dr S. Ramadoss

PMK founder opined that compensation, interest free loan will help farmers
Chennai: PMK founder Dr S. Ramadoss on Thursday demanded execution of special programmes by the Centre to prevent suicide of farmers and opined that compensation, distribution of subsidised fertilizers and interest free loan will help farmers and bring down the effects of agrarian crisis. In a statement expressing condolences to the family of Gajendra Singh, who committed suicide during a rally, Ramadoss said that the loss in agriculture and the resultant sorrow is not the plight of Gajendra Singh alone. There are millions of such stories, he added.
The loss of crops on one hand, the inability to repay the loans on the other and above all the pressure of the loan sharks had affected farmers to a large extent that 100 farmers had died in north India in the last four weeks alone.“Prime Minister Modi had said in his condolence message that the suicide had shocked the whole nation. But what is expected of him is not condolence or grief but dedicated action to save agriculture.
The government should come forward to bring a new scheme to fix procurement prices at 50 per cent above cultivation costs and a compensation of Rs 25,000 per acre should be provided”, the statement said. Mr Ramadoss also pointed out that he wanted the Centre’s and acquisition bill to be defeated in Rajya Sabha and wondered how the Union government, which increased procurement prices only by 3 per cent for farmers increased the interest rate for crop loans by 11 per cent.
