Farmer Gajendra Singh cremated, politics on

Gajendra Singh’s family and friends blame Arvind Kejriwal for his suicide

Jaipur/New Delhi: Farmer Gajendra Singh, whose suicide has sent shockwaves across the country, was cremated in his village on Thursday. His parents brought the body to the village on Wednesday night. The entire village was in shock and sorrow. His father, wife and children were inconsolable as the body arrived. His father even fell unconscious.

Meanwhile, Gajendra’s close family and relatives have blamed Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his death. “He was hanging himself and they continued with the rally. If Kejriwal’s son was committing suicide would Kejriwal still have continued with his speech,” they asked.

The eldest of three brothers, Gajendra studied up to class 12. He married early. His eldest child is a daughter studying in class 12; his two other boys are aged 7 and 10 – none of them know that their father is dead.

Leaders from both ruling BJP and opposition Congress announced assistance for the family. Arun Chaturvedi, Rajasthan minister for social justice and empowerment, said BJP would pay a compensation of Rs 4 lakh. State Congress chief Sachin Pilot said his party would support the family in whatever way possible.

Congress, BJP stage protest

A day after farmer Gajendra Singh committed suicide at an AAP rally, Youth Congress workers on Thursday staged a demonstration at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. BJP workers protested at Delhi Police headquarters demanding action against the rally organisers. Scores of slogan shouting Youth Congress protesters, who were carrying placards demanding Mr Kejriwal’s resignation, reached the Chief Minister’s Flagstaff Road residence at Civil Lines in North Delhi here around 10 am.

After they were stopped by the police, which had erected barricades, the protesters burnt an effigy of Mr Kejriwal. “They should have stopped the rally and must have tried to save the farmer. The Chief Minister should resign from his post,” said one of the protesters.

The Delhi BJP staged a protest at Delhi Police Headquarters.

Cops blame AAP, junk probe order

Levelling serious allegations against Aam Aadmi Party workers and leaders, the Delhi police in its FIR in connection with the farmer’s suicide case accused them of having instigated the deceased to commit suicide besides putting all sorts of obstacles in their efforts to rescue him.

The police also dismissed the magisterial probe ordered by the Delhi government, saying it has no jurisdiction in the matter. The FIR, registered under IPC Sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 186 (obstructing a public servant from doing his duty) and 34 (common intention) late on Wednesday night accuses the AAP workers and leaders of not cooperating with the police.

“This is totally an incident where AAP workers and leaders instigated the man to commit suicide and they also did not pay heed to requests made by the police,” reads the FIR.

The police also claimed that when they tried to take him to RML Hospital in a police vehicle, AAP workers blocked their way instead of giving clear passage to the police jeep and said he was a party worker and would be taken to hospital in their vehicle. “We then pushed them and rushed him to RML Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” it added.

3rd Rajasthan farmer ends life

Even as controversy has broken out over Gajendra Singh’s suicide, another farmer has committed suicide in Bharatpur district; third suicide in last 24 hours in Rajasthan.

According to reports, Titu, 35, hanged himself from ceiling fan. His family members told the police that he had a poor harvest of wheat.

Earlier, the day when Gajendra Singh’s suicide in Aam Aadmi Party rally hogged the limelight, a farmer in Alwar district had jumped before a train. Harsu Jaatav of Katori Wala Tibara village was into heavy debt as the yield from his crops was poor due to the rain and hailstorm.
