Corporation, artists paint Kozhikode in colours

Graffiti on Arayidathupalam flyover as part of city beautification

Kozhikode: Pasting posters of films, political parties and other programmes on every wall has been a custom for time immemorial. The district corporation council has taken the first step to bring about a change with the cooperation of interested groups and individuals.

As a first step, one of the pillars of the Arayidathupalam flyover has been painted with colourful graffiti. The district corporation council in association with the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) has completed the artwork of the first pillar as part of beautifying the city. “IIA found the project interesting and was happy to kickstart it”, says Vinod C Cherian, IIA chairman.

The rest of the pillars and other walls including the compound wall of the Town Hall will soon be painted depending on the availability of sponsors.

“The plan of the council is to do different types of paintings with different artists around the city, and some private sponsors have already approached us for this”, says C Bharadwaj, the corporation councilor.

Three artists of the city namely John Mathews, K Sudheesh and Joseph M Varghese together completed the graffiti work on the pillar within ten days. The painting is based on nature.
