Two drunken men set police bike ablaze, booked
Duo were booked for drunken driving by traffic senior sub inspector
Chennai: Less than a week after the incident at Kanathur when a drunken man assaulted a sub-inspector, policemen are at the receiving end again. This time, a drunken duo set a traffic SSI’s two-wheeler on fire after they were booked for drunken driving. The incident happened on Wednesday at around 9 pm near the Tiruvottiyur toll gate, police said. Traffic special sub inspector Venugopal was on duty along with three other personnel when the team flagged a scooter for checking. Traffic sub-inspector Ilayaraja who was on duty found that the duo was drunk after which a case was booked against them, police said.
They were asked to leave the vehicle as they were not in a position to ride when a verbal duel broke out between the two.“Initially, they tried to claim that they were an advocate and journalist and kept arguing despite being issued an e-challan. They demanded that they be allowed to take their vehicle. When the SI persisted in booking a case and asked for the vehicle documents, they called up three of their friends,” N.Balakrishna Prabhu, New Washermanpet inspector said.
As the SSI impounded their bike and rode it to the station, the five-member gang set the SSI’s bike on fire and fled the spot. “They pulled the fuel pipe and lit it with a matchstick. Since there were others around, the fire was put off immediately and the bike was only half burnt,” traffic inspector Jeyachandran (New Washermanpet) said.On Thursday morning, five of them- Prabhakaran, Prakash, Mohan, Sathish and Basheeth were arrested by New Washermanpet police. Prabhakaran and Mohan were riding the bike and identified themselves as a lawyer and a journalist. In actuality, Prabhakaran runs a biscuit company in which Satish and Basheer are employed while Mohan works in a paper manufacturing company. Prakash works as a driver, police said.
The five of them were remanded to judicial custody. Only three days ago, Kanathur inspector P.Asokan was transferred for failing to take action against two persons who assaulted his personnel while on duty.
