Chennai: As many as nine of the 36 inmates lodged special home for juvenile delinquents at Chengalpet in the neighbouring Kancheepuram district escaped from the home on Wednesday night after assaulting cook and watchman. Six of them were traced by Thursday afternoon. The home, run by social welfare department, houses convicted juveniles.
According to the police nine inmates including one convicted for murdering his brother, managed to break the door of the home at around 9.30 pm.
The minor criminals had allegedly assaulted the cook Murali and watchman Senthil when the two tried to stop them from escaping. They scaled the compound wall and fled. However the joy of freedom was short lived for most of them. By Thursday six of the escaped juveniles were found roaming in neighbouring villages and sent back to juvenile home.
“Seven of the escaped nine were convicted in theft cases and one was a murder case convict while another one was undergoing detention for attempt to murder. When caught on Thursday, the juvenile offenders claimed that they escaped to visit family since their parents did not visit them for long,” police said.
