3 more held for selling babies
Kamli Bai, who was arrested on Wednesday, has been sent to judicial remand
Hyderabad: The Nalgonda police on Thursday arrested three more persons, including a couple from Guntur, in connection with the child trafficking case. The police is now probing how many children, who were brought to the government-run Shishu Griha, were sold to families in different parts of the state.
Kamli Bai, who was arrested on Wednesday, has been sent to judicial remand, and police have sought her custody for further interrogation. Her arrest had led the police to the child trafficking case.
Kamli Bai, a former vice sarpanch, had allegedly approached several poor families and arranged for the sale of baby daughters. Police said that they could only detect one case so far.
“The couple from Guntur has been arrested as they bought the child illegally,” said Nalgonda Devarakonda (sub-division) DSP G. Chandra Mohan. Meanwhile, the state's women and child welfare department has ordered a probe into the activities at the children’s home.
The 18-month-old baby who was rescued on Wednesday was being handed over to the Child Welfare Committee. The committee will return her to her biological mother Rajitha.
The Nalgonda police has formed special teams to apprehend the other gang members. “We have named seven racketeers in the FIR. The manhunt is on to catch them,” the DSP said.
The police has found that the middle men and racketeers took most of the loot money and the biological mother gets less than Rs 8,000 for a baby.
