TRAI gets 10 lakh pleas on net neutrality

Telecom regulator has sought public comments till April 24
New Delhi: Telecom regulator Trai has received over a million response from netizens to maintain net neutrality in the country. SaveTheInternet.in, a volunteer-led group composed of over 50 individuals from across India to safeguard net neutrality, said on Thursday that over one million email have been sent to Trai through www.savetheinternet.in.
Separately over 3 lakh people have signed a petition on change.org also asking for Net neutrality. By sheer numbers this is a level of unprecedented public participation in any regulatory consultation in India’s history.
Trai has sought public comments till April 24 before making its recommendations on Net neutrality and internet-based calling and messaging applications.
SaveTheInternet said in a statement that the number of responses could be even higher, as the platform counts only those submissions that are copied to its email addresses. The users are allowed to edit and substitute its template before making their submissions to the Trai. It said that in the absence of a recommendation from Trai and any decision from the government, telecom companies will be restricted from rolling out any net neutrality violating services.
Rajya Sabha MP and entrepreneur Rajeev Chandrasekhar also submitted his official response to the consultation paper along with a petition via change.org. “You have referred to consumers response as being shrill. But the large numbers of consumers who have joined this debate are a result of the perceived bias on part of Trai and its consultation process,” Mr Chandrasekhar said in his letter to the Trai chairman.
