State-run homes under scanner

The Nalgonda police arrested former vice-sarpanch Kamli Bai
Hyderabad: The Nalgonda police arrested former vice-sarpanch Kamli Bai, who had allegedly sold an 18-month-old baby to a couple from Guntur district for Rs 17,000. Police said that Kamili, who was very influential in the villages, used to visit the poorest families and clinch deals for girl children. “So far we have found that only girl children were sold,” said a police official.
The Police is looking for the other gang members, who are said to include auto-rickshaw drivers and local politicians. Ms Rajita said she had sold her baby due to poverty. "She is my second daughter, and we do not have the money to take care of her,” she told the police.
Sources said that abandoned girl children, who were housed in the Sishu Gruha at Devarkonda, were sold secretly to couples from different parts of the state. The gang members sent pictures and details of the babies through emails and social media like Whatsapp to seal the deals. If anybody approached them, the gang would arrange a baby within a week.
No one had noticed babies being sold from the government-run home in the last year. Police has now started questioning the officials in charge of the home. A case was registered against Kamli Bai under the IPC and Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act.
