Girl with two urinary tubes undergoes surgery

The girl was discharged after being kept under observation for 10 days
Chennai: In a rare case of a girl with two urinary tubes, and suffering urine leak as a result, the doctors at Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital here performed a surgery and restored health and dignity the girl to attend school.
The 12-year-old girl from Ambattur here was found to have two urinary tubes from her left kidney – one opens to the normal urinary bladder and the other, to the genital organ. “This is the first such case to be reported in the country. Initially, she was undergoing treatment at a private hospital, but in vain,” says Dr V. Selvaraj, senior professor of urology department of RGGGH.
After she was referred to the GH, the doctors counselled the girl’s parents and undertook the surgery which lasted three hours.During the operation, the abnormal ureter (congenital) connecting left kidney to the genital was divided and connected to the upper portion of the second ureter on the left side. The girl was discharged after being kept under observation for 10 days, said Dr K. Thiyagarajan, senior professor of the urology department.
“My daughter used to have continuous leak and as a result she had to stay away from school. Now, after this surgery under Chief Minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme, she has written her class 8 annual examination,” said Parvathi, the patient’s mother. Now the girl can resume her studies without inhibitions.
