Two journalism students from Northeast assaulted in Bengaluru

The two students came to the city around two years ago to pursue the journalism course

BENGALURU: Four miscreants allegedly manhandled and assaulted two journalism students, including a girl from Arunachal Pradesh, on Berlie Street in Shanthi Nagar on Tuesday night. The incident came to light after the victim complained to city Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi on his Twitter handle and registered the assault complaint. The police are now on the lookout for the four accused.

The two students came to the city around two years ago to pursue the journalism course. They were returning home when the incident took place around 8.45 on Tuesday night. Two men, who were sitting near a shop, passed lewd comments which led to a heated argument. The miscreants manhandled the youth and shouted racial abuses at him. When the victim’s cousin raised an alarm and tried to save her brother, two more people joined and pushed the girl aside. They immediately fled the spot, but not before warning them of dire consequences.

DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil told Deccan Chronicle, “The victim posted his complaint on the Commissioner of Police M.N. Reddi’s official Twitter handle, following which the police immediately took up the case under Section 354 of the IPC (assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty). The victim’s statement was recorded on Wednesday.”

He said, “During the attack, one of the accused claimed that he was the son of a commissioner. We still don’t know which commissioner he was referring to. They are absconding,” he said. A case has been registered in Ashok Nagar police station.
