Telangana against giving up road tax

The Bill is yet to be introduced in the Union Cabinet

Hyderabad: The road transport authorities of Telangana and AP along with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have opposed a proposal of the Centre to take over road taxation and issuing vehicle permits.

The proposal is part of the draft Road Transport and Safety Bill 2015. This is one of the several changes that have been proposed in the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The Bill proposes that entry permits as well as road taxes will be collected by the Centre and later sent to the states. The state governments see this as loss to revenue and are opposing the proposal.

“The Bill is yet to be introduced in the Union Cabinet. From the details that we have got to know, it is proposed that the entire taxation and system of issuing permits will be brought under the Centre,” said Telangana joint transport commissioner J. Pandurang Naik.

“A National Transport Authority has been proposed which will centralise other subjects like licensing, permits and toll among others. We have submitted an objection to the proposal of tax collection by the Centre,” Mr Naik said.
