Gold sales increase in city by 20-30 per cent on Akshaya Tritiya
Customers began buying gold and silver ornaments since the last 15 day
Visakhapatnam: Heavy rush was witnessed at jewellery shops on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya on Tuesday. Akshaya Tritiya is considered holy by Hindus and Jains. It is believed that buying gold on this day would usher in luck and success to the family members.
Customers began buying gold and silver ornaments since the last 15 days. Owners of various jewellery shops and retailers said the sales were definitely more than registered last year. They said the sales were up by 20-30 per cent on Tuesday, compared to other days and 10-20 per cent higher than registered last year.
There are around 600 gold jewellery showrooms in Vizag, including those on the outskirts of Gajuwaka, Gopalapatnam and Pendurthy. It is expected that these shops did more business than that during Ugadi. G. Ramaswami, owner of city-based Rukmini Jewellers, said the sales were definitely higher than of last year.
He also attributed the rise in sales to the fall in gold and petroleum prices. “There is a difference of around Rs 2,200 per sovereign this year compared to last year's price,” Mr Ramaswami said. He said buyers were preferring light-weight jewellery like finger rings, earrings and chains more than those weighing heavy.
