Bengaluru: Another Green Corridor in the city
Bengaluru: Tuesday evening witnessed yet another Green Corridor in the city. This time, it was from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Nimhans) to BGS Hospitals.
The Vijay Kumar (27), who was brain dead, had to be moved from Nimhans on Hosur Road to BGS in Uttarahalli for retrieval of his organs. It took the speeding ambulance just 16 minutes to cover a 15-kilometers distance, thanks to the city traffic police creating the Green Corridor.
“We received an alert that a brain dead patient was being shifted from Nimhans to BGS Hospitals. We alerted the staff at the control room and sent a wireless message to the traffic police at every junction on the stretch from Nimhans to BGS Hospital and asked them to create the Green Corridor. The traffic police at the signals were asked to make the junction zero traffic zone and to make sure that the ambulance travelled without any stops. The entire stretch of 15 km was covered in 16 minutes,” said a senior police officer.
Kumar was admitted to Nimhans on April 17 after he suffered a brain hemorrhage. Despite surgeries and constant efforts by doctors, he did not show any signs of recovery. On Tuesday, he was declared brain dead and the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation counselled the family members to agree for organ donation.
Kumar’s organs are yet to be harvested as the declarations are yet to be made. “The first declaration would be given on Tuesday night. Only around 4.30 am on Wednesday a second declaration will be made. Following this, the organs will be harvested,” said a source from BGS Hospitals.
