Hyderabad: The long wait for compensation of over 700 farmers in Uppal Bhagat who had lost 733 acres of land to the Hyderabad Metro Rail and Musi beautification projects will end soon.
The Telangana government will distribute 1,984 developed plots admeasuring 150 sq. yards to 1,000 sq. yards to the farmers.
Uppal MLA N.V.S.S. Prabhakar, who had been agitating for long in support of the farmers, met Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and brought to his notice the farmers sufferings for the last eight to 10 years due to delay in payment of compensation.
Mr Rao has assured the MLA that the government will complete the allotment of plots by mid-May.
“Not only giving developed plots, the government should also pay additional compensation to farmers for the huge delay. The HMDA is trying to auction additional plots and make profits. Out of this, some amount should be paid to the farmers,” Mr Prabhakar said.
The government had promised to give a 1,000 sq. yard, developed plot for every acre acquired during land acquisition nearly eight years ago. However, it was not fulfilled due to various reasons.
These grasslands, which would not fetch even Rs 1 lakh per acre at that time, would now turn many farmers into millionaires with the price per sq. yard in Uppal crossing Rs 30,000.
A 1,000-sq.yard plot would be worth Rs 3 crore. The layout has been readied and a draw of lots will be conducted to allot plots.
The layout development works started in December 2012 and was completed in a year. Though the plots were supposed to be handed over in May 2014, it was postponed due to political developments over the bifurcation of the state. Since then, the issue had been pending.
About 1,984 plots were developed on 413 acre. Out of this, 46.25 per cent area was allotted to plots, 34.92 per cent to roads, 16.31 per cent vacant space and 2.52 per cent for infrastructure facilities.
