Bengaluru: Sarakki homeless to be rehabilitated

A few families begged before the deputy commissioner not to demolish their only shelter

Bengaluru: Tears of joy rolled down the cheeks of the affected people who have lost their homes and hearth to the demolition drive near Sarakki Lake, after Urban DC V. Shankar assured them they would be rehabilitated.

On the last day of demolition near Sarakki Lake, the Deputy Commissioner said, “I will hold talks with the government and rehabilitate families who have genuinely lost homes."

It all happened when the demolition drive was on in full swing. A few families begged before the deputy commissioner not to demolish their only shelter. “We did not know it was illegal to construct a house here. Someone told us that the government would give this land to us. So we took loans and built our houses,” they pleaded.

In the four-day drive, the officials have demolished 178 buildings, which included commercial and residential. On Monday, 14 buildings were demolished. Mr Shankar said that the recovered land will be handed over to the BBMP in the next two days. “A major road too has been constructed in the lake area. Demolition of the road is under progress,” he said.
