Visakhapatnam needs clean drinking water
Drains intersect water supply pipelines
Visakhapatnam: Drinking water is fast becoming a major issue for Vizag which is taking small steps toward becoming a smart city. Many parts of the city receive contaminated drinking water.
By ignoring the drinking water need of the people, the GVMC has ignored one of the most basic requirements while keeping itself busy in preparing grounds for the state-of-the-art facilities like Metro Rail and smart grid.
Residents from many parts of the city complain of bad odour coming from the water supplied by the civic body. Officials of the civic body are well aware of the fact that during monsoon or whenever the city gets good rainfall, residents of many parts in the city get dirty water supplied by the civic body itself.
Meanwhile, with the Southwest Monsoon that would be lashing the city in a couple of month's time, the situation is set to become much worse. The posh localities of MVP colonies are the worst hit and these places receive contaminated water even during normal days and the situation would be more pitiable after commencement of monsoon.
Besides these developed colonies, Sivajipalem, HB Colony, Pithapuram Colony, Jagadamba Junction, Poorna Market, Maharanipeta, AVN College, Pedagantyada, Kancharapalem, and Gopalapatnam also receive dirty water because of intersection of pipelines with drainage canals.
These areas, in fact, had old pipelines that carry drinking water for city population. As they frequently are in contact with drainage lines, the drain water mixes with supply water, posing a threat to health.
These pipelines, laid around 25-30 years ago, need to be replaced. Though the GVMC earlier proposed to replace them, the plan has not materialised till now.
Speaking on the issue, a senior official from the waterworks department said they had proposed to replace old pipelines but DPR has not been prepared yet.
