Unlike others, ASR Nagar Colony faces issues of a different kind

Visakhapatnam: Reckless driving and lack of functioning streetlights on the streets of ASR Nagar Colony in the city has been giving a tough time to the residents of the locality. Though the overall civic situation like sanitation, garbage disposal and roads in the locality are satisfactory, the residents find it tough to commute on the streets with two-wheelers vrooming past them.
Speaking about the issues, the residents said that for last couple of week streetlights on many of the streets and by lanes are not functioning. Taking advantage of the situation many people, mainly college students from nearby places gather around in the colony and indulge in activities like drinking and bike racing.
“Many locals stroll around the place after dinner and due to the reckless driving an accident can take place anytime," said a resident Vikram Goud, adding that the locality is filled with college students living by renting a place. Besides, he said, another major problem faced by the residents is the electric wires and cable tv wires hanging dangerously at many places in the colony. Since many of these cables have open ends, they can be a reason of major accident anytime, he added. The wires often break and fall on the streets when strong winds blow in the city. “We have to repair the cables by paying the local electricians from our own pockets,” added Goud.
Another resident G. Prasad said GVMC was not taking care of the trees it had planted post Cyclone Hudhud.
“It is the responsibility of the civic body to water and take care of the plants but it seems that they have completely forgotten about them after planting the saplings,” said Mr Prasad. As the locals love their surrounding and take care of the plants, they have survived till now, added Mr Prasad.
Moreover, some of the houses in the area are cutting big trees for house extension and renovation without taking permission from authorities. Though the roads and other civic properties are well-maintained, the locals complain that the silt is kept in open by the sides of the drain after the GVMC staff clean the drains in the locality.
